The measure of a good man is something you do, not what you are.
This week the New Brighton Residents Association lost it’s patron, and a person of such stature he will be irreplaceable.
Bob Andrews served on so many committees in this area it is impossible to list them all including Scouts, Rotary, Community Board, Residents Assn, Museum Trust… suffice to say an endless selfish devotion to his adopted home where he was known by some as the unofficial mayor of New Brighton.
Young Bob came to New Zealand after his father died at 42, from Birmingham in England. He lived most of his Kiwi life in Lonsdale St, amassing a 60 odd years of local knowledge, and every visitor to the New Brighton Museum was treated to a extensive oral history of the area.
A colourful record of so many years, largely lost with his passing at 90 years of age.
While this is a very brief acknowledgement of his life, it could never in any way, no matter how brief or long, encapsulate the story or his generous and friendly nature.
Bob Andrews was a man once met, never forgotten.
He will be missed.
Thank You Bob.
