DETAILS
* The idea for poll is based on the need to know the thoughts of the residents the New
Brighton Residents Association represent. It is but one way of getting feedback..
* These particular questions were pulled out of a hat of a number of questions relating to
central New Brighton.
* A few responders marked more than one option and where we could, asked for the
answer he/she felt most represented their feelings.
* 11 respondent surveys could not be used for various reasons and this will help us with a
better layout in the future with clarity around directions..
* These results were not released during local body elections for obvious reasons, to be
presented to the new Coastal-Burwood Community Board, but we were unable to make the agenda for the meeting on the 18th November, so are releasing these results now.
* The poll is just one snap-shot over three months and during that time and up to
publication, there have been ongoing changes in New Brighton that may have influenced
some of the answers.
* The New Brighton Residents Assn will continue to canvas the views of people living in the
central area and welcome feedback at anytime to:

RESULTS
* The high level of loving living in New Brighton
* Significant amount who believe the “down & out”reputation of New
Brighton is deserved to a degree.
* Majority of residents believe New Brighton is moving ahead, albeit slowly,
and there is a little concern this momentum may not last.
* There is split between those who believe they are involved in the
decision-making affecting New Brighton and those who feel left out.
* As for rating the communication from the Community Board, it appears
there is a split with the most expressing no views one way or the other.
* The overwhelming majority of those surveyed preferred the newsletter
option for information, with a gap back to those accessing Facebook.
* Natural resources was the clear winner when asked to pick what the liked
about New Brighton.
* Lack of decent shops easily led the complaints about New Brighton with
crime and the state of the roads, two other significant issues for residents.
Some of the many other complaints added were:
Boy-racers and noisy exhausts. Dog poo. Litter around the streets and
Beach & playground. The secrecy of DCL’s progress with Mall.
Some of the suggestions we got included a summer night market, outdoor
theatre, use of the empty shops and sections in the mall. Bring back the sandcastle competition. Creation of a boardwalk to Bowhill Rd on seaward side of dunes. An indoor marine themed information centre in one of the current empty spaces. A creation of active retired people as guides for those visitors who want to see more that the pier.
* When asked the best means of communication and contact with the New
Brighton Residents Assn, the clear winner was via a news-letter. People love local news.
ONGOING:
The New Brighton Residents Assn wants feedback from residents living in the central area relating to any issue around this area. This is important as it is what can be passed onto the community board or any other relevant authority.
NBRA wants to grow its registered members so we can keep direct contact with those residents and provide whatever news comes out way. Please make contact with any of the contact mediums outlined above.
It was difficult to reach the residents living within the central area boundary without going door to door, therefore we will evaluate how we conduct these polls in the future.
